I've made a puller today and also ordered a 2mm section o-ring just in case the 1.78 IS too slack. :ok

Yeah, there's a metric series but they're not as commonly available as the imperial series.
66mm x 2mm will hopefully do the trick.

Just the two, sorry. :(
They're a bit pricey in ones and two's.

slightly better in bulk-

If I just use one I'll send you the other.
And if this pump gives me another half bar or so I'll be happy to order a 10pk and have them sent to you. :ok

no don't do that I might never use them, thanks for the offer though.

No worries I though you might have had to buy a pack, keep the spare too in case you need to pull the pump again.

Well....
My 2mm o rings came today, less than 24hrs, thats good service.

I put one in paul's pump groove (ooh err mrs) and it fits snugly with a bawhair more protruding.
Image

So I dropped my engine (again) and pulled my 26mm pump.
With the 1.78mm o ring, it took a firm shove with my thumbs to get it in, even lubed up. (blatant innuendo there) whereas with the 2mm i would have had to radius the entry and the oil ways and hammer it in.
From past experience of o rings in underwater situations I figured the firm shove with the thumbs was good. The oil pressure against it should press it into the gap.
The hammer it in one might get distorted. So I went with the 1.78mm.

Some time later.....,

That's good. :-)

:ok

you mean 1.78mm ring not 1.5mm?

I wonder if that means your engine case pump bore is slightly smaller, do I remember you having an early case?
was too loose in my late case for my liking hence why I didn't use it.

Yes, you're right Paul. 1.78mm.
The 1.5 was for the pump cover but i didn't use it this time.
I did wonder about us having different clearances but though about it too late to measure the bore.
I have a late case.
All good anyway.
Happy days. :-)

reading back to page 14 of this thread...
bigbadbob76 wrote:I also measured my oil pump body- 69.93mm and it's hole in the case- 69.97mm

That was my 26mm pump measured with my cheap digital callipers but while they might not be super accurate, they're close enough.

Image

so 0.02mm all round, that's snug!!!

And I just found a scribbled note on my desk that says body=69.8mm, groove 1.5-1.7mm.
That was your 30mm pump measured with a different digital calliper.
The groove appeared to be slightly eccentric to the body which is probably why you rejected it.
So ( 69.97-69.8 )/2 = 0.085mm clearance all round.
Your 1.78mm O rings would take up that well enough with 0.18mm of compression when sat in an average 1.6mm groove. :ok

I have done some measuring of WBX cases and pumps new and old

Engine pump bore is approx. 70.1 measured at inner edge

All pumps measured at inner edge too

2x Old VW pumps 70.04-70.06

Old used 22mm Schadek pump 70.02

Old unmarked Pump 70.00

Approx 3 year old Meyle 22mm Pump 70.00 ( just removed )

Brand New 30mm Schadek pump 69.90 ( Purchased last week) - Now in BBBs engine

1 year old 30mm Schadek pump 69.92 ( just fitted)

The groove appeared to be slightly eccentric to the body which is probably why you rejected it.

No thats just what happens in an old lathe when you are centering it with a dial guage

Fair enough. :ok
The difference between our bores is very slight and within measurement tolerances of calipers, it will effect the O ring compression but THB I'm not convinced the O ring makes much difference to oil pressure.
Oil viscosity and pump displacement make the noticable difference.
All good stuff though.

Sad times here. My Mrs lost her long battle with the big C on friday morning so I'm not going to be on here much.
I'll take off in the van for a few days to sort my head out after the funeral and I'll be back to pester you all with questions after that.
:ok

She loved the van and our trips away in it.
