Right, got back to the northwest this evening after a marathon session in Bristol.
Mission was accomplished, the 'new' engine spluttered into life about 11.30 this morning. Patricks 16" is now running about on another DJ, which we hope will be using water a bit more slowly than the last one !
Turned out the spare engine was off a 2WD, so not only was there the hassle of getting the 3-way PAS pulley off the old engine, but also the difference in the pulley seal between Syncro and 2WD to deal with. We also ended up swapping Patrick nice Brickwerks exhaust onto the 'new' engine too. I left the old Belgian LPG system off for now to avoid complications, Patrick may get a current standard system instead. Total time to do the swap was around 20 hours.
Thanks to the assistance of Mudlark who loaned a puller to remove the seal, and Aidan with invaluable remote tech support.

Saw Patrick drive off into the sunset last night; apart from a bit of belt squeal it sounded very sweet. Looks like he shall be going to the Eireball after all

Van with replacement engine fitted has passed some motorway miles, engine prop bars back on so ready to use again. Thanks to Andy who gave up 3 days to do this for me.

Well done guys....glad you've got that engine up and running so that Patrick can get to Ireland.
It was a genuine VW replacement in about 2001 (according to the paperwork that came with the van)
