What a blinding weekend!

Post by syncropatrick »

An absolute winner. Went to Dartmoor National Park (DNP) for the weekend with Mr Landy90. Partly to say goodbye to my small plot of wood regretfully, but mainly to go road trip off-roading! Found 17 legit byways within 10 miles of Moretonhampstead, did 10 on Saturday, then jumped over to Okehampton and did the Okehampton Loop Road. Byways ranged from rocky, steep and super tight (2" clearance either side round a bend), to easy wide open moorland with fab views and 18" fords. The Loop road wasn't much cop technically but the views are stunning, a couple of fords, and the majority of it is getting closed by late August. Anyone in Devon should drive it before it closes, even in a Forester or 4wd Volvo. There are a few short-cut sections we deemed permissive routes without the all important sign saying 'no vehicles' so we did those as well. Naughty I know, but it'll disappear in 2 months. These were proper job - both diff locks up very rocky tracks.

One could easily fill a 3 day weekend down there, but most routes are not paint friendly as gorse is very, very scratchy, so take your gash vehicles.

cheers
Patrick.

Dartmoor is my favorite place in the whole world, having lived on the Moors for a few years a while back, there are some great off roading places, did you do Trendlebere Down towards Becky falls, a little tame, but real wild.

Aye, it was fab Jed!

I'm off on the Mendips on Sat June 13 just for the day, for a paint-friendly byways run. If anyone has local knowledge of routes please PM me, as I've only got 3 paint-friendly ones so far.
