early and late stub axles

hi all, Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the difference is between an early front stub axle and a late one. Im told i need to get the late type for my van in order to be able to fit big brakes . Cheers ben

I think the castings are the same but they are machined differently.
From memory its the machined flat surface on the lugs which the calipers mount on. On one the calipers mount on the front on the other they mount on the rear.
Vans which had PAS also have different track rod mounting holes.

early have threads for caliper+early small outer bearing
change over years threads for caliper + larger outer bearing
late caliper has threads in caliper + larger outer bearing

later has elongated area for trackrod end hole allowing different position for power steering also cast marks for ABS option drilling

you will also find with the laters ones one side is made in germany , the other is made in france. early ones are all made in germany!
