Any tips on how to remove the side water cap?

Hi,

I have a 1986 Westfalia Joker and cannot for the life of me get the cap off the water inlet. I have THE separate key which seems to go in but the cap just seems to turn without coming out.
Is there a knack to it? Do i need to leave the key in and keep de-pressed?

Water caps are usually of the type that freewheel when locked. To unlock, turn the key and the two bits of the cap should lock together. Being sort of three pronged, the cap is very difficult to get a grip of, (and my hands are knackered anyway!) so I have made a tool which is a piece of wood with three pieces of dowel glued into holes to make a key. Can't get the cap off at all without it.

i used a screw driver..
then a new one. vw bus shop do them

I had this problem. but now have the knack of it.

Put in the key and turn half a turn anti clockwise.
This should unlock the cap and you can now turn the cap 1/3 turn and it pop's out.

To put back. Push cap in and turn 1/3 turn clockwise.
Turn key half turn clockwise and withdraw.
