Anyone using an old dishwasher as a parts washer?

Post by silverbullet »

Based on the knowledge that carbs and the like clean up nicely in the dishwasher (don't get caught by the Mrs!) and now I have a wbx crankcase to get spotless...
I have an old but working 3/4 size dishwasher and thought that it might make a good DIY parts washer, if I cut the baskets about a bit. Should be big enough for anything flat 4, just a bit worried about rust staining if there's salt in the tank (very hard water down here)
Anyone got recommendations for detergents that won't do more harm than good?

I used to back in the UK, and it was priceless for cleaning things small enough to get in there.!

Spent a couple of hours in the company of an AA recovery driver after my Fastback spat the dummy traveling back to Ireland.
Anyway, he swore by an old dishwasher for degreasing his motorcycle engine parts.
Apparently the older machines that had a hot water feed (as well as the cold) are the best, the hotter the better, 90c wash is what you want.
He told me he'd use the dishwasher in the kitchen when his Missus was out!!
