Halfords socket set - good deal?

Hi Guys,

Is the following socket set overkill for a novice?

It's got 50% off at Halfords at the moment.

Also, I presume a 2 tonne trolley jack is insufficient for a 2.5 tonne campervan?

You aren't lifting the whole weight of the van (it would be difficult to balance it on a trolley jack!).
Check that it has enough lift though, vans are a lot higher off the ground than normal cars.

Are ramps a better option? Or do you use different lifting methods depending on the job?

I use ramps for most things, hydraulic jacks for working on wheels.

The socket set doesn't look bad at that price, nice to see 15 and 18mm sockets included which are needed. Their pro tools are pretty good quality. Only you can justify the price but they have a lifetime guarantee so you shouldn't need to buy another.

I bought a similar set to this 12 years ago when i first started out doing my apprenticeship and I still have it all today after all this time. The ratchets and sockets used to manage all the 4wd stuff i used to work on, where the snap on (or snap off as i call them) used to fail regularly.

If it's the same quality (which it looks like it is), then i'd thoroughly recommend it.

As an alternative to Halfords socket sets you could consider those made by Teng Tools & sold at very good prices by an ebay seller located in a village just south of Wrexham in Welsh Wales. He has various Teng Tools for sale on a regular basis.

Thanks for the advice guys. Bit the bullet with the halfords set. Used it for the first time whilst replacing the intermediate pipe in my exhaust system with a new Brickwerks stainless steel one (see link).

As a slight aside, if you find Halfords doing an offer on their professional ratchet spanner set, GET THEM! I got a set at half price a few weeks ago and can't believe how good they are, or how I ever managed without them

Can't fault halfords pro socket sets and ratchet spanners,been using them for years and as said above they have a lifetime gaurantee.

Actually Rob, my brother said the same thing. We had some bolts that were a tight squeeze and a rachet spanner would have been useful. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
