Head repair - Durafix easyweld ??

Post by 937carrera »

I need to try and fix a head where a glowplug broke in (not by me, not T25).

When the remains of the glowplug are out I think I will need to repair the head, before using a timesert type solution.

Has anyone any experience of using Durafix Easyweld or a similar product ?

I have used LUMIWELD on the cooling fins of my Triumph motorcycle. It has held tight for several years. This has a thin section and was easy to do. However, the base material on a cylinder head is much thicker and will soak up the heat applied with a small torch. I had the spark plug thread replaced by a local motor specialist. They used a brass insert that worked OK, it was not too pricey either. If necessary they could TIG weld the head before machining. I would suggest taking your head to a small, backstreet specialist for their advice before doing any work yourself.

Ah,thanks for that, Lumiweld also came upon my search for possible solutions.

Once I have the remains of the glowplug out I'm quite comfortable tapping it myself, the problem is that contrary to what I was told someone had been in before me and broken a drill bit in there, which broke the specialist extraction drill and moved if off centre :(

The head is still on the car which is not mobile so I am my own back street specialist..... sometimes it's the only way to learn

I'll be planning on using a glowplug repair kit, like a timesert, to do the repair, I'm just thinking ahead to what I may need to do build back missing alloy, it it extends beyond the insert.

To repair in that area I would not trust Lumiweld. Tig weld is best way to go in my opinion. The whole area could be filled in and a new thread cut. Your choice, however.
:ok Good luck either way.
