Vernier gauge

Post by call me Al »

Can anyone recommend a decent digital vernier gauge, they seem to range from a few pounds to hundreds. Screwfix and RS have some for around £20. not looking for ultra high precision just reliable and useable.
Thanks

Depends on what you are using it for really.

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/calipers/7251889/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - these are great if you need accuracy to a thou or three. However, if it's just for spiggot ring diameter or shims then a cheaper one will be fine.

Bought mine from Aldi I think "Workzone" - plenty good enough for vernier, surprisingly accurate against my micrometers, BigBadBob76 was also pleasantlly surprised by his.

And having gotten the hump with digital gauges going skew if or flat, and struggling to read the scale ones with bad eyes, get a one with a dial. Easy to read and needs no batteries.

Replaced the battery in mine yesterday after 3 years. I did have 6 months of warning with difficult to read screen :)

I bought cheap and proved again buy cheap buy twice. Cold garage and toolbox killed mine particularly once I dropped and lost the battery door

There's usually a few decent secondhand ones on eBay - I got a good deal on an analogue Mitutoyo vernier not long ago.

+1 on the Aldi one. Its good enough for home use. They are reliable in a 0.05mm accuracy.
If you want to buy one for work then Mitutoyo is the brand but IMO the digital ones are not as accurate as the oldschool analogue ones.

Old school mechanical ones are great. Seek out your local calibration house though if they are really old second hand.

A UKAS calibration cert is only £30-40 but a good idea if you dont know their history/treatment.

Bought mine of eBay for about a fiver,it's a metal one don't buy the plastic ones, had it for 3 years once I've used it I take battery out and put back in box ,protects it from grinding dust that's the main vernier killer in our shop also someone leaving it part way under guillotine.

thanks all
I have a basic cheep and very tarnished one in my tool box, I was thinking of a digital one for the sake of my eyes. I have to go to Screwfix soon so will probably get one there, thou reviews are mixed.
