Empty tin top, should I be worried?

We have an 1982 with very little sound insulation and deadening, just the rubber mats and standard door cards. Recently I have added some Dodo mat to the cab floor, inside the cab doors, inside the sliding door, behind the fridge and inside the boot lid.
It has stopped the ringing when you shut the doors and it has reduced the noise levels in the cab and all for about £40 and a few hours of work. Would be good to do the rest at some stage.
But going back to your initial question, yes you probably are damaging your hearing at those noise levels for prolonged periods of time. I am guessing the pop top will be quieter due to the soft lining of the roof.

it was sitting on the dash I guess to be fair I should be measuring at head level incase there is a difference.

Perhaps your tin top doesn't have the thick wadding type insulation stuck to the underside of the roof like the caravelle models have. Carpet with underlay would help aswell, The new factory look heat pressed carpets come with underlay for the cab floor and walk through.

no definately not, it has been lined with 3mm ply and a carpet covering. It was quieter when I used it as a camper with all the furniture, fridge and beddding but still not as quiet and the pop top

I guess there are three sources

Tyre noise
Wind noise
Engine noise

You could dip the clutch and see what the levels drop by to get the engine component.

or turn the radio down.

I will run some more tests including the car

I got a massive reduction in noise with dynamat type material. Even patches on each panel reduce the ‘sat inside a rattling metal biscuit tin effect’. Naturally completely covering panels on the inside makes a much bigger difference.
insulation behind door cards will further reduce noise. I’ve also read a thread where someone used roof flashings in the rear air ducts to cut induction noise.
In the Bentley book it says VW used under seal in wheel arches to deaden noise as well as rust protection, so maybe it’s worth an extra layer in the wheel arches?

Funnily though, HSE says ear protection is needed at work over 85dB, 3M recommend above 83 to at least use foam type plugs noisy beasts.

Today I checked the tin top again at 60mph =80dbA and 70mph =82dbA held by my head and not on the dash (on dash adds at least 3dbA)

I noticed in my car that road surface made up to 4-5dbA difference, this road was quite rough, concrete was the worst, rough tarmac almost as bad as concrete

I have added some rugs to the engine lid area as sound proofing and refitted one cab step mat, it also was not so windy today as my first measurement which I think adds a lot.

Next to try more soundproofing, the piece on the angled engine bulkhead is missing, need to find a replacement.

I'm planning a rock n roll bed/seat so that should help.
