Advice; How to remove an '89 Vanagon GL steering lock

Post by pier1 »

Hi

Hope to buy a 1989 Vanagon GL at an auction but unfortunately, there are no keys.

Could anyone explain the process + what tools I need to disconnect the steering lock to remove and start the car?

Can I get an ignition + side door key cut from any VW dealer if I give them the chassic no?

Many thanks

Keys can be cut, by a suitably equipped locksmith, to a code which can be found marked on some of the door lock cylinders once they have been removed.

With regard to your first query, I think it is highly unlikely that you're going to find anyone who is going to tell you on a public forum how to bypass the steering and ignition locks on a van so that you can drive it away. I can only suggest you get it towed to someone who knows how to sort it for you, or pay a mobile locksmith to attend at the auction site.

Ok thanks.

It would be helpful to know how to disconnect the steering before I place a bid! I could then fly up and drive it to the nearest MOT garage, then get a steering lock fitted.

So if someone would like to send me a PM with this infomration, that would help me decide whether to bid on the vehicle which looks good.

Thanks

The van may not be a runner, so would need towing away from the auction site.

Yes after around 6 months of being parked up I expect the battery is flat and possibly engine needs work. There's also a clip on steering lock attached to the pedal but that can be easily removed.

I got a tow charge which was 3850 for 1000 kms. So I'd like to try and aviod that by trying it myself then if not, get a local mechanic so i can drive it back to where I'll store it.

Thanks anyway
