Advice: Difference between an EU & US '89 vanagon GL camper

Greetings,

Hope to buy an '89 Vanagon GL camper (manual) at an auction but have not viewed it yet. Vehicle has not been used for about a year (was towed away) No keys.

Before I do:

Would anyone know the differences between an '89 German assembled Westfalia and a US Vanagon GL?

Based upon the chassis no, if I give that to a main UK VW dealer:

Can they cut a key for the ignition and doors?

Or, if I remove either the door or sliding door handle:

Is there a key number which I could give to a VW dealer to cut a key?

I seem to remember there was a number ethched on the door handle which I removed from a beetle I had years ago.

Many thanks

The vanagon GL camper would be higher spec than a basic European westfalia, it depends on what model westfalia you compare it to. The vanagon was made in germany but will not have type approval if it was destined for the states.

Just a side note, we owned an 84 vanagon gl. We couldn't have been happier ... it had air con, pas, plus a few bits of americana i.e. switches lights etc. I may be biased but i would look again for the vanagon. Oh try and Google the vanagon brochure video! ... happy buying
