Gas alarm - wrong CO alarm

Post by itchyfeet »

I have one, driving down the motor way today and it keep going off, wind the window up and it stops, window down it goes off.

You have to wonder what we are breathing when driving?

My guess is the oil burners but what gas do you think?

Doesn't it depend on the sensor - Is it a CO detector or an actual butane / propane / nat gas detector

We have a CO alarm in the house, I ran the van with the garage door open(van on the drive outside), the exhaust went through the house and set the alarm off having gone through the garage, kitchen, lounge then into the front room where you could barely smell the exhaust.
So I assume it was the general level of exhaust fumes drawn in through the van. Could it be your own exhaust that is setting it off by being drawn in some how?

No a proper gas alarm, propane, natural gas but clearly others

After some thought and discussion I'm thinking faulty engine hatch seal drawing in exhaust when windows open

When the title was gas, I was going to suggest you had an LPG leak, but unlikely on such well maintained vehicles :)

It can certainly happen that your own exhaust can come into the interior through an open front window, I wouldn't have thought hatch seal alone as I assume you'll have carpet etc covering the engine floor providing a further seal, of sorts.

No LPG in the camper and no carpet, bed cushion was removed.

tonight I'm fitting the seal I bought a year ago, rubbish design having to stick it on why has somebody not come up with one that clips on the edge?

I was going to say the same, procrasinated for a year, took 20 minuites.

the hardest bit was getting the old contact adhesive off, I made it easy by dripping white spirt in the seal recess and leaving it while I had dinner :D
