FUEL CONSUMPTION FIGURES

Post by thebobster »

It occurred to me that, even though I am fairly quick and accurate at mental arithmetic, I could not visualise in my head how "Miles per Gallon" (I know, we buy our fuel in litres these days :rofl )translated into the Johnny Foreigner equivalent of "Litres per 100Km". So I looked it up online and found an easy to use converting calculator which will work the figures in either direction.
http://mpg.webix.co.uk
I know that some of our vehicles have speedometer and odometer readings in kph and km respectively and some people look for vehicles to buy in foreign parts where fuel consumption is in L/100km and thought the converter may be useful to have. I have jotted down, as an example, a few of the, hopefully useful, conversions relevant to the **Type 25/ T25/ T3 which I have included below.

M.P.G. ============= L/100 KM
15________________________18.8
18________________________15.7
20________________________14.1
22.5 ______________________12.6
25________________________11.3
30_________________________9.4

I didn't know which section to post this topic to be the easiest to find if needed so I have left it here for the wisdom of the moderators to decide its fate. I hope somebody finds it useful!

**Type 25 designation used on VW Heritage website who insist it is correct. -- Please don't shoot the messenger!

To get MPG divide 282.5 by the number of litres per 100km.

Probably best not think about either.
If you can't afford the fuel you will never afford the maintenance.

...and litres/100 km is volume/length, which is the same as area.

So:

M.P.G. ============ L/100 KM ============ mm^2
15________________________18.8________________________0.19
18________________________15.7________________________0.16
20________________________14.1________________________0.14
22.5 ______________________12.6________________________0.13
25________________________11.3________________________0.11
30_________________________9.4________________________0.09

XKCD explains this nicely:

So even on a bad day, my van uses up a 'tube' of fuel that's less than 0.5mm across.

Sad but I am with ichyfeet. Although it can be justified on the basis of dependencies/addiction such as cigarettes, whisky and wild wild women. :lol:

Keeping track of fuel consumption alerts you to any possible problems that may be gradually worsening. If your fuel consumption increases, it's time to check hoses, seals, oil, clutch slipping slightly or binding brakes etc. We all know our vans and can usually tell if something is amiss, but keeping an eye on a simple thing such as fuel economy can only be a positive thing.
