Any I.T people here - How to load Windows 7

Post by nesty »

Any I.T people here

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X100. I don't use it that much. Tho I use sometimes if going away if i find a place which has got wi-fi!

When I got 2nd hand. I got it cheaper, as it has Linux Mint operating system on it. I mostly use the Lenovo for internet. Though, as the intervals of use are far between. I keep forgetting how to use Linux Mint!

On my PC I have a spare +1 product key. Though, I did free upgrade the PC to Windows 10 from Windows 7 last year. I wish to load Windows 7 on to the Lenovo.

I've never actually loaded an operating system on to a PC before. Mainly, as all the PC's I have bought had it pre-loaded and never really had that major of a problem, where had to reload!

I've looked on Microsoft site and it says if I put in my vaild product key in, I can download it on to USB ( I have a 6GB USB stick).

Do I have to fully delete Linux Mint prior? There are no files on the Lenovo, so anything wiped not an issue.

Yep. So download the software to the stick first. Wipe the laptop (format c drive) in dos. ,then plug USB on, it will run off the executable file and self load.

Then go onto eBay and buy a Chromebook for £100 and never use Windows ever again! ;)

Can't I just delete off Linux Mint and just load on Windows 7 without completely reformatting for c drive?

I don't have a formatting disk for the Lenovo.

Nothing easy is it! :(

You don't need to delete Mint or anything else before installing win7, during the installation, at the where do you want to install it page, go to advanced and delete all the partitions so it is all unpartitioned space. Then you will get a clean install.

you spot on.
It won't let me don't load it anyway saying that the product key effectively (HP property) and won't let me download it on to another device.

Might have to purchase a disc. Is there much difference between 32bit & 64 bit? If 64bit takes more to run then not a requirement, as only lightly used.

As a basic guide, Windows 7 32BIt will only be able to access a tad over 3.5GB of Ram, no matter how much is installed. So if you less than 4GB of RAM go 32BIt, 4GB or over go for 64BIt. In general use you are not going to notice much diffeence between 32 or 64. You will notice a differnce with more RAM however, so go for 64Bit if you can

I think I have only 4GB of RAM in it. I think upgraded the RAM when I bought.
Though to be perfectly honest. I can't remember how to check it in Linux Mint!
