Rad replacement

Post by AngeloEvs »

Checked WIKI and Haynes but no info regards how much clearance is needed when jacking the front up. I just need an estimated height.

Did a refill and flush a two days ago and everything appeared fine, no leaks. Have not used the van but ran the engine to bleed. Checked it today and a slow tiny small drip...aaagh! Checked the lower hose and dry but it is from that area.
I read somewhere that new Anti Freeze will expose any potential problems regards leaks but may be that is just an old wives tale. Anyway, just checked again and leak seemed to be diminishing and finally stopped. I have a bad feeling about this.......

Had a slight weep last year after flushing cooling system, replacing coolant with new and bleeding. The culprit was the small bleed screw on top of the rad. Wrapped the screw thread with a couple of turns of PTFE plumbers tape (held the screw head downwards, did the tape clockwise, so that it didn't unwind when screwing it home). Did the trick.
When bleeding the system I used a 4pint milk bottle with a hole cut out of the bottom, several turns of plumbers tape around the neck made a nice tight fit in the engine bay header tank. Yes, I know I should have made up a Libby bong, but was pushed for time...!
Hope that this helps.

My new rad is 47cm tall, and I've 39cm of clearance at the front (other flavours of ride height are available).
Have you ever seen an unhappy fool?

I didnt jack the van at all, standard height van and all was good. With the spare wheel carrier down you can rest your back on it. It's pretty comfy down there.

Thanks everyone, strange how it suddenly started today and then stopped. The drips were pink and very clear so the flushing worked I guess. Took it for a good run and not a drip in sight. But nice to know that if it starts again I don't have to jack it up and if I do it doesn't need to be too high - I really don't like getting underneath a jacked up vehicle.

Axle stands plus a secondary support system. A jack alone? Not a chance!

82 old diesel rad. Didn't need to jack up. Comes out at an angle half way out.
