Chassis number - finding it!

Post by Ali101 »

Hello,
Wonder if anyone can help? I have a plate inside van at the drivers door side with numbers on it. These do not match the chassis number on the V5 and MOT documents.
I've had the van for a long time, I've no suspicion of any wrong doing but confused now.
If the number on the actual chassis matches the V5, does it matter about the number on the plate?
Thank you!

Brilliant, thank you :)
Is it dodgy if the number on the plate isn't the same? Maybe it's not meant to be the chassis number? <confused>

The VIN number on the plate (just inside drivers door) should match the V5...

At a recent MOT it became apparent that my VIN plate had been removed and lost by some fool who did recent bodyshop work on the van. I think it could have failed the MOT but the guy accepted my explanation and said to just get it sorted. It helped that I had taken a photo of the VIN plate which was still on my phone. He said that if the Police stopped you and inspected the van, it could be a long walk home.

I searched the internet and found a couple of companies who supplied blank plates, but didn't emboss/imprint them. I'm guessing there is some legality involved. I eventually found a company who supplied and imprinted nearly an exact replica, though it was not cheap for a bit of tin! (£50.00) http://www.vintagsuk.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I guess you need to check the chassis number underneath as well, but if you have the V5 you can maybe get a duplicate made, with the correct details. If the chassis number is wrong as well, then something does seem to be amiss. I think there is also a VIN under the passenger seat.

At times its crossed my mind that you never really know the full history of your van, but until this incident with my VIN the idea of checking all the numbers had not been something I thought was necessary.

Check the chassis number and let us know. Then you will have to decide about what to do.
