Hello,

Hubby and I are already thinking of trying to replace our camper. I changed jobs recently and don't work weekends anymore, so have more chance to get away. Because of the fire that we lost our van to last weekend, he is very wary of getting another air cooled engine. I'm thinking we were just unlucky or is is a safer option a water cooled van?

It wouldn't matter if it's air cooled or water cooled, just ensure that all the fuel lines are changed to correct hose and for extra safety you can fit an automatic fire extinguisher:

Thank you The fuel lines were all new 10 months ago when it was serviced. Still don't know what the cause was. Our van is still on the campsite waiting for the insurance company to collect. Hopefully we will hear soon.

Diesel is the other option.

Petrol is inherently volatile, so the risk of fire is probably the same irrespective of whether a petrol engine is water cooled or air cooled. Diesel is much less volatile and so the risk of engine fires from small fuel leaks is minimal. That's not to say that there aren't other downsides or issues with diesel engined vehicles, not withstanding emissions, just that this kind of fuel related engine bay fire is pretty much unheard of with a diesel engined van.

Aside from preventative measures such as hoses, etc, the other alternative tactic with petrol engines is to fit some form of automatic fire suppression system like the Fireboy or Blazecut systems.

Is there any chance the blazecut cut go off if the engine hotter than normal as mine did on way back from Weston the weekend stuck in traffic for 2 hrs.

Or you could look at lpg?
