Replacing the steering wheel

Post by Lanciaman »

After following numerous horror stories about stolen vans I decided to buy a Disklok for mine, but my standard steering wheel is too big.
What advice can anyone give regarding a suitable replacement? I have power steering, but obviously don't want to obscure the speedo with too small a diameter (esp when going flat out and trying to hold it back under the ton... :!: ). Do other VW wheels fit directly? I quite like early Golf ones, but am not sure of the diameter of those.
What about air bags - am I right in thinking just fitting one in the wheel is not enough as they need sensors?
Any advice gratefully received, thanks :ok

If you have power steering you should have smaller than standard size , unless you have electric steering and have not down sized the steering wheel.

You need to get a standard wheel from a power steering equipped model, if you see what I mean, they fit with the large Disclok.

I think they are 420mm, or go to something non standard like off a Golf etc.

If you like the wheel then consider the pedal lok instead.

I'm using a pedal lock already but the Disklok seems pretty robust so I thought I'd have that as well.

Morning!
No, not that I know of but following some tales of other people's losses has made me think about it. It seems these vans are easily nicked, so the least we can do is defend them. And parking up when away you have no idea of the local area so even more vulnerable, possibly. I've got a number of 'defences' in place, but I reckon the visible ones are probably the best. We all know it can't be completely prevented. As usual the courts do not address this with appropriate penalties and personal emotional damage goes uncompensated.

Most thefts of these vans involves a truck that hauls them onto the back of it.

I chose the tracker route.

I'm put off trackers as they seem to be too easily disabled. But equally whatever lock you use can be easily picked.
Perhaps I should go for both, at least a tracker might make it findable. Any recommendations?

Yes
There's a huge thread in members only regarding trackers.
I had one fitted now for a number of years.
The tracker discussed tells you when the van is being tampered with.
And if it moves without authorisation.
The TK103 seems to be the one of choice.
Although the new TK104 is an improvement.
