What factory options were available in 1990

Post by Gary. »

I'd be fascinated to see a catalogue or brochure from the late t25 period, showing available options when purchasing a vehicle. Does anybody have such a thing? My doka seems to have a few, such as rear heater & rev counter. But I'm wondering whether stainless steel mirrors, for example, were standard? How about sunroofs?

I highlighted that vehicle for the amount of extra options that were fitted.

Surely what you need is a list of the 'M' code options? There's a thread on that subject somewhere on this site, with a link to another site that gives all the details.

Just picked up a glossy brochure for the 1990 Transporter (I could scan the whole thing for all to enjoy?), options were:

• Second sliding door.
• Rev counter
• Halogen fog lights
• Headlight cleaners
• Sunroof - would be interesting to see what a factory one looks like as I think mine might be
• Front quarter window vents
• Electric remote control mirrors
• Automatic (petrol only)
• Power steering
• Fuel burning heater - What? The fuel from the tank?
• Tow bar
• Alloy wheels - "for distinctive sporting flair" :D
• Bulk head options; half height & split partition.
• Electric windows
• ABS
• Radio preparation - what the hell does that mean?

To make full use of the factory options that were available you have to have a left hand drive vehicle. Take the Carat , in rhd it may have looked great compared to a standard transporter but it was lacking in many ways to the lhd version, both inside and out.

It depended on how much you where prepared to pay you could spec one the same but in the UK in those days when you bought a new vehicle you paid special car tax and then VAT was applied on top so UK models had a lower standard specification to keep an already expensive vehicle within reason, a lot of the options where dealer fitted which then didn't incur special car tax only the VAT.

You cannot spec a right hand drive Carat T3 up to the level of a left hand drive. VW did not make alot of the interior parts for the carat in right hand drive. The exterior was also lacking a full body kit. It had nothing to do tax or costs. Its a shame vw would not tool up to make the same spec models for the right hand drive market.
