MIG welder fail, but a quick easy fix!

Post by silverbullet »

My trusty old BlueWeld M22B of uncertain vintage has only ever let me down once before (when a pair of relays that control the gas and wire feed funally burnt out their contacts)
Yesterday it started to get an intermittent failure to strike an arc. It dawned on me that it was always when welding in a particular orientation, so I opened up the torch to find that the earth braid had completely frayed though at the terminal crimp and has been arcing! The evidence was copper blobs inside a bit if very warm insulation....
I managed to squeeze the terminal enough to release the frayed stump, beat it back into shape with some punches and then cram the cable end back in and re-set the crimp.
Easy repair diagnosed and done in under an hour and lesson learned!
