Stop leak

Postby stupedals » 18 Oct 2018, 10:31

Hi all

Just wondered what people's experience of engine stop leak additives are? I know it's best to find the fault and replace seals but MOT is coming up and I've a long list of things needing attention. Does it work? Does it cause any harm? At least in the short term?

Never used it before so interested to know your thoughts.

Cheers!

Never used it on the van but have tried it on cars before without success.

I have used k seal in the past with some success on minor drips. But i think using it may have caused the premature failure of my dalek cap.

This ^^^
Seen it many a time. I keep half a dozen caps in stock, and still run out often! And if it's knackered your cap,, what's it done to your forty quid GSF radiator???

And why worry about a coolant leak for MoT? If you have a list of stuff to do for test, you'll need to get them done, but I don't see the link between a coolant leak and MoT.
How bad is the leak, and where from?

I think that a coolant leak now comes under "Fluid has leaked, posing an environmental risk"
"The Tester will fail a vehicle if a fluid leak creates a pool on the floor within 5 minutes that’s more than 75mm in diameter or if there are many leaks which collectively leak fluid at the same rate"

:-)

The QI klaxon moment I was expecting!

"8.4.1 Fluid leaks

You must check for fluid leaks on all vehicles other than Class 3. You should do this with the engine idling.

A leak of fluids such as engine coolant, screen wash and fluid required for Selective Catalyst Reduction aren't reasons for failure."

It's just oil, fuel, PAS and brake fluids that are considered 'orrible for the purposes of the test.

That was from https://www.motester.co.uk/mot-test-of-exhaust-system-and-emissions/ It does not differentiate between the fluid leaks when it says "The Tester will fail a vehicle if a fluid leak creates a pool on the floor within 5 minutes that’s more than 75mm in diameter or if there are many leaks which collectively leak fluid at the same rate"
The setting out of the failure state is poor and can be interpreted both ways. The second sentence does not state "The Tester will fail a vehicle if a failure causing fluid leak ...... " it just states it as quoted.

Fluid leaks
The Tester will check for fluid leaks on all vehicles other than Class 3. This will be done with the engine idling.

A leak of fluids such as engine coolant, screen wash and fluid required for Selective Catalyst Reduction aren’t reasons for failure. .The Tester will fail a vehicle if a fluid leak creates a pool on the floor within 5 minutes that’s more than 75mm in diameter or if there are many leaks which collectively leak fluid at the same rate

The Tester may refuse to carry out the test if there’s an excessive fluid leak. In these circumstances, if a Test fee has been paid, it will be returned.

The following categories apply to defects in this section:

Defect Category
a. Fluid:
i. leaking excessively and likely to harm the environment or to pose a safety risk to other road users
Major
ii. leaking continuously and likely to pose a serious risk to road safety
Dangerous

If there are specifically excluded examples, which there are, you can't fail on them. It explicitly states in the tester's manual that a coolant leak is not a reason for failure (unless, of course, it's pouring onto the tester's head, squirting into his/her eyes or he/she can't see for steam!)

Thanks for the replies, onky just catching up.
Sorry, maybe i was a bit unclear. I meant additives to the engine to stop oil leaks.

Still, info re MOT on fluid leaks was useful!

Oh...
I wish I could do emojis on Tapatalk! (Rolling eyes face palm) Lol.

Don't bother with magic additives, waste of money. An oil leak is an oil leak, it's a case of just fix them I'm afraid.

I figured as much. Not one for additives usually just got a lot to do on her for tge MOT. Also changing seals not something I've before. I'm guessing it's fairly straight forward (depending which one is leaking) ? Anything I should be aware of?
