An MOT Question.

Post by AlandAnn »

Maisie goes in for her MOT tomorrow morning. How bad does an oil leak have to be before it fails? I'm sure I've read somewhere that when its not leaking, then there's something wrong!:)

If the tester is going to become covered in oil whilst testing then he can refuse to test. If he starts to test I don't see that he can then fail it due to an excessive oil leak, only if the oil is contaminating such as brake disc, tyres etc. Just my opinion.

Thanks, next question: I have noisey tappets until she warms up...is it best to go for a wee drive before or am I just worrying too much... I mean she's gonna fail anyway . Should I take a peace offering before the tester starts the inspection,?

If you know gona fail, why are you doing it?
Isn't it best to sort out any known problems first
Noisy tappets won't matter(they all do that mate)

Devils advocate: taking for a test knowing it's gonna fail means you will get some idea of the amount of work required.
Noisy tappets mean that they are not working efficiently. Could affect emissions?
Apart from that, it really depends on how good the van is. if it's not gonna fail on very much then Yes, do the work first. How good a mechanic are you? Also, first impressions count so maybe keeping the engine quiet will give a good first impression and tester won't be too keen. Just my opinion - and the dogs.

From Govt website:
Usually, they’re tested using a meter. Petrol vehicles used before August 1975 and diesel vehicles used before August 1979 are tested by sight. Just hope the tester is short sighted.

I've been pulled by VOSA for a roadside inspection on my Audi 100. The examiner said that he would deem
Any vehicle that leaks more than a 10p worth of oil during his 3 min inspection unroadworthy. I know it's not an mot test answer but should give some context.
