Standard 14" steel wheel stud conversion

Having got all the parts together to rebuild the front brakes, I thought it would be a good idea to change to studs instead of reusing the old bolts.
I bought 50mm (total length) studs which I dry fitted with the new discs and freshly powder coated wheels yesterday.
So here's the problem, when tightened into the disc the protruding stud has about 9mm of thread sticking out of the nut when tightened down, which I'm guessing will prevent me from using the standard chrome hubcaps (not yet bought so can't trial fit)
This leaves me with two options, return them for 40mm studs (which would leave no threads protruding from nut) or cut them down (but being as there tensile is this a good idea?)

Any ideas would be great for my indecisiveness!

I cut mine too. Before and if you cut them, put the nut on first. Then Cut. The nut will de-burr it when you unscrew it.

Cut them down I also did this years ago, but as above put a nut on first.
