To hubcap or not to hubcap?

Post by Emma&Al »

So I've not had hubcaps for years now. Which means I have black wheel rims which are a bit rusty and naff looking.
I seem to have bad luck with getting hubcaps stolen but Ive been thinking about getting some again. I don't have a big budget for them as most of my money goes on non aesthetic things for the van!

What do other people do? Could I paint the wheels with hammerite? Pros and cons of hubcaps?

just get some generic full wheel cap/covers what ever you cal them to fit a 14" wheel , the plaine types look ok and easier than cleaning/painting your wheels :wink:

I've got Hubcaps that are well past their best so i'm thinking of going "Bare"
My Wheels have already been painted by the previous (idiot) owner and it looks like it was done with a rag :evil:

There are small caps on ebay just now at £3.99 each, they cover just the inside and protect the bolts and middle from the elements. Good Luck with whatever. :ok

Didn't help there did I? :roll: :lol:

Embarrassingly, I not only put this post in the wrong section, but I've never actually bought a set of hubcaps...how thats happened in 22 years of driving, I don't know?!

Thanks for all the suggestions - and AlandAnn you did help!

So...Im guessing not everyone feels ok with painted wheels? :-/ The small hubs sound interesting.

I bought some great plastic wheel trims of eBay for £28. They even have a nice VW badge in the centre. If you search for VW Lupo wheel trims 14" they fit the steel wheels Perfect.

I cheated too.

Bought something like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E ... ge_o05_s00" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008 ... ge_o06_s00" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Couldn't afford new alloys or other stuff at the time - so this option works well for the time being! :)

going to get these myself, mine are the chromed ones and need to be polished twice a year to remove rust spots.

I went down the rover p6 route. Managed to get a set of 4 domed caps for a tenner, removed the rover badge, polished them up and they look great. Definitely something to consider if your on a budget.

Yep the best ones to have. Just wipe them over with the wash sponge no tarnishing.
Going naked causes all sorts of problems with seized wheel bolts especially the rear hub nut.

Ok so you've convinced me that getting hubcaps are the right thing to do. I suspect that the bolts are pretty rusty by now but Im going to search online right now. I like the sound of the Rover ones, and yes, I am on a budget for aesthetic things so that might work :)
Thanks all
