Largest size to fit carrier?

Post by badgerfax »

Morning all, Sorry if this has been asked before, just could not find definitive answer.

Lots of people go for a larger wheel & tyre size and I am wanting to go bigger too.

Whats the largest diameter you can fit under the front?

I am quite happy to modify/cut the clam shell to fit a wider tyre.

I guess some people are happy with a can of leak stopper to get out of trouble, Or maybe just ride with the 14 up front?

I've got a 15" MT one in mine; it's close to the moving parts but does miss them by about 5mm.

Just to complicate things, I think there were two sizes of wheel carrier?

There were two sizes. One for normal steels and one for wider VW alloys.(I have been looking for one for years)

Or just use the original wheel/tyre, I know it's nice to have the 5th alloy but you can still drive home on the standard as it 'should' be the same size.

I'd like to go for some 16" steels with around 215 70 16 tyres (700mm diameter)

Trouble is that you have 27 inches or 685mm between the chassis rail under the front. I'm pretty sure the clam can be modified to take a wider tyre.

I don't know how other people get on with carrying a spare?

Not sure what it would be like driving a mismatched pair even if it was to get to the nearest tyre place.

I have larger wheels 215/75/15 and intend to buy a rock mountain westy wheel carrier at some point I think.

Largest size to fit carrier?

Post by clift_d »

We're also running 215/70 R16 on 16" steels, and I don't think this size of tyre can be accommodated in the front clam shell carrier. There have been a few threads on this on the samba, and the consensus seems to be that this tyre size is too large. There is a van cafe spare wheel carrier kit available in the US that replaces the OEM carrier which I understand will carry this size, but there's are some issues with the spare rubbing on the steering linkage that need to be addressed. We're currently using a wheel carrier based on our Paulchen rack but will probably end up with a rear carrier in the end.

I run 215/65/16, pretty sure they won't fit in the clam. So I just have the stock 14 in the clam. Id supposed as long as the drive wheels (rear) are the same, you'd be 'safe' to hop to the nearest tyre place.

Or am I wrong?

Don't think different size wheels on the back would be a problem unless it's a syncro. As far as the transmission is concerned it would be the same as going around a corner.

Think this must be the route most people adopt who have larger tyres.
