1988 Autohomes hob glass replacement

Post by whitty1721 »

Hey there,

We had an incident over the weekend where our hinged glass hob protector/cover got broken. Has anyone ever had the need to replace similar with advice on where to source one? Don't really want to put a full new hob and sink unit in but struggling to find any parts from the usual online haunts? Also trying to replace like for like to maintain his authenticity if possible, all other interior parts are original. He's a 1988 Autohomes Komet conversion.
Thanks

My local glass merchant cut me a new smoked glass coffee table top many moons ago - worth a look if you can't find a s/hand one anywhere.

That happened in my truck. I knew what model the hob was and was able to source a new one.

The glass will be toughened, so you can't cut a new one.

First step then is to know what make / model hob is fitted.

They grind it to shape when it is toughened, the coffee table top was toughened as you can't use plain glass for that.

All the references I looked at said that you couldn't work with toughened glass, with many stories of attempts at hand filing resulting in shattered glass on the floor. That's when I decided to buy a new glass cover from the manufacturer.

I must admit that I was surprised when they did it - you could see which sides and the corners that had been ground. Someone who really knew his stuff I should think - it was nigh on 40 years ago so I can't check it out again as they have disappeared like so many.

Sadly people who have these hand/eye practical skills are all disappearing, everyone is pushed to more mental education rather than crafts in the education system. Even a good basic mechanic is hard to find - look at the number of people on here searching for one all the time. We used to have a very good panel beater locally ( ex Rolls Royce ) who did a perfect job on a crumpled wing now it is a case of putting a new one on.

Other way round in my experience, it's machined to shape and then sent away for heat treatment. I've had a few pieces done by a local company in the past by -

I also need a hob glass replacement on an Autohomes Komet - tried loads of glass places who can cut me a piece of toughened smoked glass but only in 6mm (or 4mm) but I need 5mm thickness - anyone know of a source that sells 5mm thick toughened smoked glass - made to measure? Or better still, an original replacement!
