Gas cupboars steel box requirement ?

Post by Cobra88 »

Hi All

Being able to boil a kettle etc in my Caravelle is turning into a moneypit all of it's own.

£185 for a hob
£75 for a gas bottle
£30 for pipes and fittings
now possibly £100 for a gas tight metal cupboard with a 55mm lower lip and a drop vent.

Is the cupboard 100% ness ? ie legal requirement ?

will most likely go for 904/907 type bottle as I don't need a 4.5kg jobbie but 907 etc very pricey refills but available all over Europe.
I don't winter camp so don't need Propane

Regards
Rick

In my holdsworth its in.a wooden cupboard with a floor vent and no seal

propane and butane are heavier than air so if it leaks it falls out the hole in the floor.

nobody will know when it was installed, code of practice may have changed since the 80s.

I fitted a gas alarm for peace of mind.

If you can manage the space then Calor/Flogas is so much cheaper than Gaz. I have a 7kg in my truck, costs me about £16 for a refil. Compares to about £35 for 2.7kg Gaz, six times the price

That said, my AS has cupboards designed for 2 x 907 bottles, so that's what I have. Cupbards are wooden with a floor vent I think. Truck is steel (because everything else is), externally accessible, with a metal grid base.

mine had 2x 907 but I converted the space to a 3.9 calor much cheaper
I take a 907 regulator and a 907 bottle to cook outside so I can run on 907 if I'm stuck

I bought a 3.9 Calor propane as I had an empty sitting in Garden

I will make a decent meta enclosure at work as 99% of ebay ones don't have the required 50mm lip on bottom.

Thanks Guys

It gets complicated once the installation is for someone else. The regulation says it must be sealed and vented, it also says you can only have one flexible connection. It further states that your liable for the installation once you sell the van, otherwise your only liable to yourself. So when I sold my last bus I took the gas out.
From a sensible perspective the gas, if it leaks is heavier than air. So it will stay in it’s airtight box and ‘fall’ out the floor vent. Or it will displace the air in your van while you sleep, for good.
An easier option is a big twin burner gas camping stove with a big propane bottle and a long hose. Then you can use it in or out the van and disconnect when not being used and it’s safe as houses and just keep it in the cupboard.

I also have two bottles, one for UK and one for Europe and just pack the two regulators in the van all the time. While the bottle fittings are different the hoses are not

Mine left the Autohomes company with the gas bottle in a small cupboard, strapped and at floor level with a vent. Been like that since it was made in 1987 so that is how it stays if I sell.

I have never heard of anyone dying because they didn't have one of these lockers.

you know what I mean

Just following the guides I found via the web.

I can make one at work anyway
Just pointing out that most of the ebay "gassafe" lockers aren't following the requirement

Ah, OK I had seen that, some thoughts:

I didn't see any reference to steel in there
You can achieve the 50mm by having a smaller door and lip where the door would extend down to
Those regs are out of date since 2011, see https://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread. ... 656&page=2
Wood is more intrinsicly safe than steel, no chance of a spark

I tried searching for BS-EN1949:2011 +A1 2013 yesterday without success....... unless you want to pay BSi £199

that's great

I won't worry too much then

it seems fine with the 3.9 kg bottle strapped into position with correct bracket.
Just make sure I turn off bottle when I'm done :ok
