replacement internal striplights

Post by islandboy »

In the process of refurbishing interior. The old striplights are pretty poor light output. Is there a straight replacement internally, ideally LEDS, so I can use the existing casing and front cover.

Many thanks

I've not seen a "plug in" replacement, and if there was, you would still need to remove the high voltage converter unit from the inside (which would involve an easy bit of wiring).

However, you can buy strips of 12Volt LEDs very cheaply from ebay. You just cut them to the length you need. You would then remove that ^^^ high voltage thing, glue the new strip in place and wire up the LEDs to the existing switch (minimum of knowledge and tools required).

Tip 1 = decide whether you want the bright "blue white" type (a bit harsh imho) or the nicer (imho) "warm white" version.
Tip 2 = buy from a supplier with UK stock (unless you want to wait weeks to get it)
Tip 3 = make sure you get your red & black / +ve & -ve wires correct or they simply won't light up.
Tip 4 = you can get "colour changing" ones with a little remote control. (I use them = 8) 8) )

I purchased AUDEW DC12V 4.5W 72 LEDs Lights Bar Strip Lamp Universal Lighting Up for Car Camper Van Bus Caravan Boat Motorhome Kitchen Bathroom 340MM ON/OFF Switch (2pcs) from Amazon £14 for two. They are surface mount. Very bright only one needed in the van and that had to have white tape stuck on the diffuser to avoid the glare. Going to draw only 1/3 amps! No significant battery drain.

I did the same thing you are planning and did something very similar to what is being suggested above. I used a soldering iron to remove all the "bit" not sure what the correct term is that are required to make the florescent tubes work but are not needed for the LEDs. It didn't take very long and has been a big improvement. this post might help.

Yep, I did the same, took the original fitting apart, ripped out the innards and put 12V LEDs in. Works a treat - the LEDS I bought were on sticky pads so very simple and easy to do on mine (mine is a different design though)

Mike

PS Just noticed you are in Ryde too, so if you need a hand shout! I live at the top of St Johns Hill near Gassiot Green.

Warm white strip of LED's ordered. Soon have them sorted. Rebuild inside nearly complete.
Thanks for the offer Mike, I'm within whistling distance on Marlborough Road, always good to know help nearby.

Small world!

I used to work at Trucast until a few years ago!

With my general poor skills in maintaining my van, I will need more help than I will ever give! :) Although my van went through its MOT first time earlier this week, which is a blessing!

LED Striplight manufactured. Easy to do, just need to tie down wiring that's showing.

Mike, do you have a local garage/mechanic that you use for your van ?

Hi

Good work! :)

When I first got my van I found it difficult to find someone I could rely on. Tried various places (who I won't name and shame) who were poor to indifferent. One recommended a new engine when I was having running issues, which I later diagnosed as a loose vacuum hose and a new jubilee clip solved the issue! Plus another did not diagnose a failing ignition amplifier (again solved this myself, with club80-90 help)

For several years I have used Rob Gaze in Cowes on Mill Hill Road. He has been really good and specialises in air-cooled/ T25s, but he can be difficult to get hold of in the summer months! (He has replaced my front screen and welded the surround, fitted new twin Webers too plus other work).

Last two years I have used Ashey Road Garage - they seem competent and reasonable. (Again a bit of welding and some brake work)

I have heard there is another place in Fishborne which a friend has recommended to me but I am yet to try them personally.

I have found a decent (and reasonable) upholstery place in Calbourne. Wife does soft furnishings (curtains etc.)

Minor repairs, some electrical work and oil changes etc. I tackle myself.

Who do you use?

Mike
