How do we refill our underslung LPG tank?

Post by JodieandBorja »

Hello Guys,

Sorry if this is a dumb question!

Can anyone advise how we can refill our underslung LPG tank? - see photo!

We have a VW 1990 Vanagon Atlantic Westfalia.

We have been advised that this should only be done by a qualified attendant at a serviced fuel station or garage - and that it is dangerous (even unlawful?!) to do this yourself.

Is this the case or can this be done ourselves at a regular Autogas fuel station using a normal gas fuel pump?

FYI we do have a Euro adaptor for refilling in France/Spain but wanted to top up in the UK before we head off.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Cheers

You can just fill up at any filling station that does LPG. You'll need an adaptor to attach the tank to a UK pump which you screw in behind the cover cap with chain on the right end of your picture. Then you can simply connect the pump nozzle to the adaptor and the pump should fill the tank until it is 80% full and then cut off automatically. Simples.

It would be a good idea, if you don't already have one, to download a translated PDF copy of the Westfalia owners manual from the westfaliat3 website here, as this will tell you all about the gas tank.

The UK fitting is similar to a lightbulb bayonet. Push the pump nozzle to the fitting on your tank adapter & turn it clockwise until it stops - about 1/4 turn. Pull the lever on the handle and lock it using the small locking catch, then push the big button on the pump, keep it pressed in & wait for it to fill up. It will stop automatically when around 3/4 full. When you release the nozzle there will be a whoosh of lpg coming from the adapter as you take it off, that's perfectly normal.
