Driving with the table set up

Post by Born Too Late »

This might be a daft question but can/should you drive with the rear table set up or is it considered dangerous in case of an accident? We're going on a longish journey soon and I was going to leave the table up for the kids on the back seat but not sure now if it's a good idea

Cheers

I wouldn't do it if I were you. There's no knowing how it would fly about in a collision.

Their your kids, do what you like. Me and my sister slid around in the back of a Bedford van in the 70's on a vinyl sofa side ways on without seat belts, didn't do us any harm. Your a good driver, take it easy. Some idiot might T-Bone you, but the odds of that happening...Well.

Dangerous and pointless having the table set up when driving. Anything placed on top will fall off every time you brake or turn left and right. It doesn't make sense.

DON'T! Just imagine a table top in the back of your neck at 50mph and then your kids joining the table as they all exit the van through the windscreen!

And on this note anything heavy in the back could come forward under heavy breaking or an accident.
Even things in the front can go backwards.
I once had a rear end shunt and a pullout stereo in the dash shot out into the back taking a chunk out of my finger on the way past

Maybe get one of those lap tray things you get for elderly to eat their meals off? They have a bean bag cushion sort of thing to rest on their lap. You could maybe drill a small hole on one corner to put some strong cord through and fasten that to something so that it cannot fly forwards too far. Just a thought?

I have a westy with the swing out table and have driven with the table swung out in front of the kids - they were belted in. Re setting the table - tried it once but the wine glasses and 2 plates of dinner went flying when going round a roundabout - not recommended

I drive with the table in position, it's well secured, no way it's coming flying through the air , the children have colouring books, iPad and food on it, no different to what they would have on the seats or on their lap if there wasn't a table, they are secured with seat belts.

Thanks all for your input, decided not to after all. As said above, no matter how safe you think you drive there's no accounting for the other prats.

We've found some lap trays that fit to the kids' seats instead. :ok

Wise choice. Look at the human skeleton if you are in doubt!
The area from torso down completely unprotected why many die from internal injurys in RTA's. A table up would sadly be the perfect height to hit that area I'm afraid.
