Seized lock

Post by nobbyfox »

The lock on my gas cover (metal casing covering the front of the underslung gas tank on my Westy) has seized solid.
Have tried penetrating fluid, still won't budge.
Do any of you lovely people have an idea how to open this?
VWBusshop has a lock in stock so should i just drill it out and replace?

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, scrap it and start again with a good quality lock. Pay particular attentionto a muck proof escutcheon. The one I have is pretty much water proof. Let's face it, it couldn't be in a worse location.

Thanks Max.
Think I will drill it out and replace. My dust cover
came off too so lots of crap and water ingress in lock.
Will buy a new one of those too.
And yes it is in a very crap position!!

Cheers

Cover on mine is missing entirely. Anyone recommend a specific replacement?

I believe the originals are still available on various sites however you may try CVC. Mine's a cracker but unfortunately it was made by the late Harold English.

It's fixed!
I just gave it a few (about 10) gentle taps with a hammer and it now works.
Must of loosened the corrosion!!

In regards to the dust cap cover, I ordered one from BW (looks identical to the Gunzl version) and it didn't work.
The thickness of the plastic that fits over the lock to let it 'hang' meant that it no longer closed as the catch did not strike the lip on the inside.
The cap was too large to fit over the lock too so just falls off.
Will try to make the cap smaller with PTFE tape or similar.
