Post by Simon james »

Hi there does anyone know how to remove the metel strip from the front of sink unit 1980 westfalia
I would like to clean it up and think it would be easy if removed
There three small screws on the underside and i msure you have to remove the knobs etc
Any ideas are welcome

Screws, knobs, and I think there's some sealant holding it on. Did this 3 years ago, can't remember much more than that

If I recall correctly, cooker knobs pull off and there are a couple of screws next to them to be removed. Also the battery/water level meter cover plate needs to be removed - undoing the screws holding it in place frees the cover plate and the electrical indicators, the electrics then get pushed back in through the hole in the metal facing strip. Then the screws under the bottom edge and it's then a case of easing it off - it comes away at the base first as the top edge of the metal strip hooks onto the edge of the sink top - I can't remember which edge has the lip and which edge has the groove but you'll work it out.

I've tried painting it but I'm not happy with the result so I'm going to give another go. Powder coating would give a better finish if you can get a good price.

Gentle persuasion slowly upped in ferocity. I didn't think it was going to come apart at first either - maybe a bit of white spirit to loosen any glue?

Bit of a thread resurrection here but I have just removed my front metal strip and can confirm that the sink has the lip with the front plate having the groove.
I did take photo's and will post up for the wiki when I have written it up and can get onto my PC to post the pics.

Check the sides. There are screws holding it in either side - i powder coated mine and it looks great
