Getting the Panel Van show on the off road

Ok , freshly motivated by the Surrey Lanes  and the fact that there's half a chance that December will see work go quiet, its time to get stuck in .... 

A quick recap - I have 16" panel van from finland with no front diff and so i bought a 5, 4, 3 box and front diff these are waiting to be fitted. I want to try and not get too precious so figure I will try and fit everything pretty much as is and see what happens . Clearly both will end up with Aiden eventually ( in prep for tdi?) but I figure I will give them a go first.  **I  have never done anything on this scale before ** :shock:

So.. I have the major components to get the 4x4 back up and running. More importantly I have the vehicle in a Syncro shed parked up next to Nick 'footstuck''s collection. He will be around to help as and when but realistically I could be on my own.

I figure on starting with front diff . As its currently out of vehicle  - ( all original front diff related stuff missing) - what i would like from the syncronaughts is a  practical list of jobs and checks to do both with the diff but also in and around the space left under the van at this stage. I will put together a sequential list of 'to do's so hopefully things won't get too out of hand. - What would you do , avoid , replace . Etc. ?

Like I said - I have the major parts but no bolts, mounts, rubbers etc etc . Will be tracking these down as well ( cheers Aiden ) . So thrown in ideas for front diff jobs / shopping list...cheers

Still not done it! :roll: :lol:
You could check the brake lines and clips that run above the front diff.
Personally whilst it's all in bits, I would fit new cv's and boots.
Start a build thread, it makes you work faster :lol:

Make that renew ALL the brake lines. The one over the gearbox is a pig to replace especially if you've just put it all back in :oops:

I am assuming this is the build thread? I have front shafts so will service these, - Do i need to change flanges, seals etc on the diff as it came from a 14" or is that just the g box and rear shafts?

i think the front inner is the same for 14"-16" You should double check that first though. Front outers come in two different sizes for 16" dependent on whether it came with a front diff lock

Yep.

The 14" outer is the same as a 16" without lock, 16" with lock is the bigger one. Inners are the same.

Just about to put a 16" a locking front driveshaft up for sale taking it of the van today

While your removing the diff I would remove the sub frame and at least clean it and paint it, preferably get it galvanised (Medway galvanising is not too far from you and has a 24h turn around). As said the break and cluch solid lines would be easy too change while every thing is removed,

You could also start on the front suspension returning the bushes and ball joins etc.

The list grows! any basic servicing / checks to be done on the diff whilst on bench? I presume freeing up actuating pin is a must. not quite as straight forward as the rear. (still have a shattered punch stuck in that!) anyone done front diff bits on the bench? :D

isnt that just something covering up where the front driveshaft fits?
