they have been kanckered since i bought the back, and have been using 8inch lenths of 22mm copper tube to hold the doors up ever since, one of those jobs i kept on putting off/forgetting about. any way i was at the scrap yard on saturday looking for some bits and peices and saw one in the boot of a car and it looked long enough when extended and short enough when compressed, married it up against the vindic ones and hey presto it fits and works so i went around 3 mk4 golfs poped them off and fitted them, now i just undoo the handle and all the doors lift all on there own. total cost £15

We used vauxhall astra ones, slightly longer but still do the job

Thats excellent! Thanks Mine are worn out aswell. They are Volvo items with a parts number on them but I´ll be seeing my scrapyard man tomorrow, for sure

If you want the originals re-gassing or some purpose made (heavier lift for bike racks etc) then I can recommend SGS, helped me sort some for a roof.

You should be able to buy these gas struts from any decent pneumatic equipment supplier. They would be known as 'Industrial Gas Springs'. Not too sure what 'N' rating we use but I think its about 500N. Is that right?

I got new ones from Vindic, they were 200N, old ones were 150N.. wouldn't want anything stronger than that if you want to be able to close them again

Doesn't the heavier rear door with glass need something stronger than 200N ?

I fitted Saab bonnet struts on the rear door, strong enough but a shade long.

Just make sure you get someone to hold the door when you change them. I learn't the hard way and now have a ding to fix.

good stuff.
i thought more than 200 N could twist the vidic out of shape, copper pipe, how posh i use a stick of pine.
someone advised me these were the ones...
