Syncro Clutch change........ Engine or Gearbox drop?

Postby KarlT » 01 Dec 2018, 19:00

Hi guys.
Clutch has started slipping on my subaru converted syncro.
But what is easier..... engine or gearbox drop?
Whilst neither appeals, lol, I'm thinking engine.
Cheers Karl.

When we lifted the EJ out of the bus, we found that it would go straight up through the engine hatch once the exhaust was off but it was on a 4-bolt adaptor plate, so no studs protruding.

gearbox off is easier as you can do it without breaking into the clutch hydraulics or the coolant system the hardest bit is getting the RJES bellhousing to separate from the engine, there are a couple of lugs on the bellhousing that allow you to get prybar in, be aware of the studs which may well be drawn out of the bellhousing and stay stuck in the engine (or is it vice versa I can't remember) which is why it is harder to separate than a wbx

Obviously engine protection and prop have to come off with gearbox out - you can leave the prop bars and prop attached at the front but unless you have use of a ramp you'll want the space for yourself and your mate whilst pulling the box and certainly when refitting it, see the wiki article where my gearbox to trolley jack mount is detailed that will help you keep the gearbox on the trolley jack and not drop it on yourself or your mate

we did this on Torsen's van in the summer turned out to be oil on the clutch, the gearbox input shaft seal. gearbox drop is easier IM (humble) O
