Front Wheel Bearing Replacement

Postby garyd » 06 Oct 2018, 16:52

After owning four syncros for a total of around 20 years I am now faced with replacing a front wheel bearing for the first time. Having searched through both this forum and the Samba I have not found any detailed reports on doing this job.

So, has anyone got any tips or warnings about the job?

I can see the basics of what needs to be dismantled to separate the bearing housing from the suspension and the need for a press to remove/refit the bearing from the housing but are there any 'hidden' issues I won't find until I'm deep into the job or any special tools recommended?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Gary, pay close attention to what is being pressed into what, to avoid using the balls within the races to transmit load.
In a word, best practices will avoid the disappointment of ending up with a noisy new wheel bearing.
The fit is quite firm and various bits of tube and mandrels are required.

If I recall correctly, to remove - press hub and inner race out destroying bearing, press outer race out of upright, pull inner race off hub. To install - press bearing in to upright, then press hub into bearing taking care to support inner race.

That's it

Except that the bearing remains in one piece throughout (although the grease shields may get ripped off in the process)

If memory serves .......1. Drive to Ian’s 2. Remember all parts + ample cake 3. More cake
Think that just about covers it

And there was me going to offer pressing it out and in... cake also works for me.
If I was doing my weekly day or 2 in MK each week I could have turned it around in the week. But that’s all stopped at present.

There isn't much I won't eat!

Rather a busy bunny right now, but I only live 4 miles from the works and weekends are a possibility ;)

Come to think of it, I am still keeping DSM's syncro bearing/balljoint mandrels safe!

thanks for the offers, guys.

I am not yet organised with parts etc at the moment so this is a week or two away. Probably most likely to follow up with Ian just because he is a lot nearer than Wales or Lincolnshire.

thanks
