Gearbox Oil seal changeable in situ?

Postby crazydiamond » 27 Apr 2018, 12:39

The gearbox output oil seal to propshaft is leaking. Aidan, can I change it in situ, dont want the expense and complexity of removing the box.

Same as front diff input seal iirc Jeff, and I have done that in-situ. You'll need a length of bar or square box drilled appropriately to restrain the prop flange while getting the nut loosened. Prise out the seal with care and tap the new one in with a suitable mandrel. The seal has a protruding dust lip so inspect the back of the flange for scoring or rust damage where it runs.

Yep done it procedure easy enough I used a length of angle iron with two 8.5mm holes for two of the flange bolts to go through then you can undo the main nut yeap have a good look and the flange for scoring and if present may need to be speedi sleeved if surface is badly scored.

All fixed, looked like some water had permeated the old seal, the oil I drained looked like some water had got in, so maybe the new seal will fix it. Nice new oil (second time this year)

Yeh did it in place no problems, just backed it onto my old and trusted ramps . Made a bar to bolt to flange, breaker bar on the 24a/f nut, jack under breaker bar and the vehicle weight "cracked" the nut, then it was just a puller to get flange off (one I bought from machine mart years ago) Wish I had drained oil first that would have needed my sump guard off and I'm lazy. All good so far.
