16" RHD Kombi

Postby syncropete » 29 Mar 2018, 11:44

Keep finding these rare 16" vans! :D Have found a 16" Kombi with a popup safari roof here in Tanzania. It appears to be a genuine RHD with sliding door on the correct side etc and a genuine 16". Its in good working order and in regular use. Current owner bought it from a Safari company that operated it in the Serengeti. Its in the green colour associated with the Jadwagens and could well be. Underneath looks pretty immaculate and rest of the body is a bit dented but rust free. Is it worth following up , given the costs in bringing it back to Europe ? Big question - Whats it worth?

Yes thats what I thought. Its got a factory wheel carrier and sliding windows middle and unusually rear. I didnt have much time to look properly, but I would like to find some archive photos of it on safari with zebras, lions and elephants !

Most Americans are scared of gearsticks, so they'd cack themselves in a RHD.

Update - Had a good look over the van today and its definitely factory 16" and RHD. Chassis underneath has no corrosion and is in the original escorial green. Even the fuel tank sender is still bright and shiney. Mechanically it needs a fair bit of work and has got a carb water boxer. I would have expected a 2.1 DJ. Were they made with a carb engine? No power steering and rear locker only. Factory wheel carrier, headlight washers and rear wash wipe. No interior in the back. Factory Kombi with sliding windows in centre and rear. There are a couple of minor bits of corrosion to the floor pan that would be easily rectified. Body has been resprayed and is full of filler from minor dents. The price is attractive and I might just buy it and sit on it for a bit. I think I will apply for a heritage certificate and see what the M codes are.

What year is it? Early syncros came as a 1.9 carb only, was the M-code for the 16" HD package available from the very start?
Certainly sounds intriguing.

Just that bodywork then... Simon's carb 2.1 always ran well and maybe if is 2.1 then done for reliability... lions get hungry at night... don't they?

Its a KG vin making it an 89 which is the same as my other lhd 16" in UK (orange one still not sold) . I have sent away for the heritage certificates for both. The winning bidder for the orange one doubted it was a 16" as it had no decoupler!
The one I found here has the body strengthening plates and infills in the rear 1/4s and all the other parts such as bigger driveshafts, brakes, sticker for tyre pressures with 205R16. etc.
Be interesting to read the M codes when I get the certificate. Unfortunately the white label is missing from under the dash.

Update -
We now own it ! Did some more research based on the Chassis plate under the seat. It is RHD, Escorial green and originaly had a 1.6 turbo diesel JX Fitted. Its destination was "TS". Anyone know where that is? There is no underseal underneath, so I guess it was destined for a dry climate. Chassis etc is in exceptional condition, original green paint. Anyway, I have secured its future for now. Dont know if we will restore it here or sell it. PM me if you have any interest.
