Cable gear linkage

Postby Robjackson » 14 Mar 2018, 13:37

After many problems with gear linkage and not being able to source a replacement front rod I have decided to go down the cable route if it is possible. I have a syncro so don’t seem to be able to find any information on the conversion. Any help and or guidance would be much appreciated.

Cables on a syncro? What do you hope to achieve? All the linkages I have seen on cable conversions seem to involve multiple cranks, rods, joints and dont look like they will last very long at all.
Why you need a front rod rod? If the fork is damaged or the tips mashed off that can be easily sorted to restore the gate.
A good rod shift should be a delight to drive on a syncro.

Thanks for the reply. For a few reasons

1) the throw/ position of stick. A cable system would allow positioning wherever and the throw would be minimal.

2) the front is mashed up and a dodgy repair done to it previously so don’t know how it should actually be to copy.

3) the change would be much smoother

4) easier to access parts below for repairs or replacement and oil change

5) less to get damaged when cables can be fitted out of the way.

My gear changes have never been a delight and no matter how much I adjust it never seems to get better and after reading a comment by Aidan where he recommends not sitting with your hand on gearstick as it can cause excessive wear on gears I think that any slight variation from the correct adjustment would do the same.

I can’t see why a cable system wouldn’t work, it’s just that I haven’t seen any.

Thanks for the links. I have seen them all before but never about syncro. The cableshift one looks the bees knees but I don’t know if it’s compatible

won't fit as the reduction gear housing on the Syncro box is quite different to the 4 and 5 speed end cases, ask them if the do a version for the Syncro

I am hoping at some point in the future to fit a second underslung battery/storage box like this one, on the other side.

The removal of the gear linkage would be an advantage, as it would allow me to have a bigger box.
I hadn’t though abbot a cable system so will watch your progress with interest.

Below is the conversation (minus pleasantries) with the guy at cableshift.

Me:- I am looking to fit a cable linkage system to my vanagon and yours looks perfect. The only problem I have is that my van is a syncro version (4+g). Do you have a system that works on this gearbox?

Him:- The C-S 094 'kit' has been installed on the 4WD Syncro.

Me:- Is the shift pattern the same? How much is the kit? How much is shipping to the uk? A few forum members are interested, is there any group buy price?

Him:- The shift pattern is OEM VW, with a 'reverse'/'compound low' lock out (by depressing the handle) similar to OEM VW.
The price is $649.95 (USD) ea. Shipping to UK (via DHL) is approximately $100.00 (USD). (I can quote a price when I have a 'ship to' address).Unfortunately I do not have a 'group' discount to offer, however shipping in 'bulk' could be less expensive, individually.

At that price I can’t see any reason not to fit it. Can anyone else? Unless you are all about the originally of course but in that case you wouldn’t fit a big shot shifter or the thing silverbullet is developing either. I really am struggling to find a downside to this

Surely you can get a front shift rod all new tabs and bushes for less than 750 !!!! try jason edwards for a secondhand one Ians repair tabs and a full replacement bush set wont cost much more than £150 from Baxter and you will have a stock proven setup that works in all conditions and is proven with over 30 years of use and lots of change :ok :ok
