Hi-Lift Jack storage

So,
I am pretty sure there has been discussion about storing your hi-lift jack in the past.
There are many opinions out there -
Some say keep them inside, some say keep them outside.
Inside is not really an option for us. We just do not have the space.

So I have been looking at fitting it to one of the spare wheel carriers, but i really want to try and get it up front.
The main reason for this is that we already have a sunbstantial amount of weight on the rear of the bus and i want to try and even it out a bit.
I am even thinking of storing the Tirfor winch in the front bash plate (i know this seems silly as one of the positives of the tirfor is that it can be easily accessed if you do get stuck. but the way i see it is that i will just have to do a bit of digging to drop the front bash plate and access the winch. this decision is not final).

So what are your thoughts on having the Hi-Lift up front on the outside?
Is it worse than having bull bars?

I was thinking of bolting it to the front panel with a couple of upright supports coming from the top of the bumper too.
Bumpers are standard and not these huge American things.
Anyway, feel free to call me a muppet or worse.

Seems to me that you'd be letting yourself in for the same kind of issues putting it on the front as you'd face if you were fitting bull bars, i.e. insurance, safety, regulations, etc.

I shortened the upright on our Hi-lift and so it's now short enough to live under the bench seat. If I had a Tirfor then I'd probably keep it in our Trasharoo - the times you'd need it you would never get it out from under the bash plate.

Tirfor inside the bash plate sounds good to me, I sometimes need it for pulling trailers around.
Hi Lift will hopefully be living in the treasure chest so out it comes to get to the tirfor!
That space in the bashplate has to be used for something useful!

Try getting a Tirfor out from under your front bash plate when your van is stalled in a river or up to its axles in mud. Good luck with that.

All good points and taken,
but really, I like a tirfor, and it would be prudent to have it more handy if it looked like it would be necessary.
At which point one might choose a course that had somethings to winch from if stuck.
Generally I can guess when I am going to need it, not even bothering to try before winching.
I'm just not that kind of go get stuck in the mud driver these days...
And as for fording a river, I would be very cautious indeed.
Whenever entering a hazardous area one has to have eventualities covered.

That's what I was thinking...
If we are driving on anything that looks a bit dodgy, we would spend 2 minutes removing the winch before we entering said obstacle...
A very large percentage of our driving will not be off road anyway, and definitely not in stuff that we are likely to get stuck in (unless that's the name of the game).
The winch is a last resort rescue tool for us... And if I have got so stuck that we can't get to it, then I have been very silly and deserve the consequences! Ha ha!

I have my hi-lift on a bracket i Made up which holds it on the B pillar just inside the sliding door it holds it solid and is substantial enough to hold the Jack firmly and safely inside the vehicle (pic on facbook just shared it with you ) drop me a pm if you are interested

Slight distraction..
I have been looking for an adapter that fits VW jacking point..
Would also like to possibly lift a wheel or tow hitch.
Is there a good source of those accessories?

The Land Rover Hi-Lift adaptors also fit a T25 and are readily available. Hi-Lift branded wheel lift attachments are also readily available. It's not a good idea to lift from the towbar or bumper.

Some of the LR jacking point adaptors fit rather better than others too!

I'm a bit late to the party here, but have you thought about breaking the jack down into parts, i.e. the shoe, the bar, the handle and the running gear. All of which can be tucked away around the vehicle. Get yourself some clevis pins and you could put it back together again in a minute or so. It's not like we need to get the hi-lift out on every trip.

When I first bought the Sika I used to do this to store it inside the cab behind the seats (Before I made up the secure bed storage) as I didn't want to keep it in the treasure chest in case I needed it to get me out of a situation.
