Maxxis Trepador tyres 205/70/15

Postby Al Housman » 22 Oct 2017, 21:14

If anyone is looking for some decent MT tyres which are ok on road maybe look at these. I got my set with about 10mm of tread in exchange for a £100 load of logs!

I was a bit dubious at first but found a set of merc steels and gave them a go. I have been running 215/75/15 BFG ATs for about 9 years and in fact have a brand new set on my mefros waiting to be fitted again but I like the Maxxis so much I can't bring myself to change back.

What I have found is that the very slight reduction in tyre size helps the Doka roll much better and the handling is great. There is a slight rumbling but not excessive.

They're not the cheapest at about £88 unfitted but may be worth a gander. My truck really does feel happier bowling along on them and they're good offroad and tough. And they do not seem to be wearing ridiculously quickly either.

problem for me would be having to carry two spares and the lack of a winter rating would mean as of 1 january i wouldn't be able to drive through germany in the winter.
I have the wrangler duratecs, best tyre i´ve ever had and way better than the bfg ko2`s ,cheap too

Oponeo rate these as ‘summer’. Is that correct?

No it has the 3 peak rating and M+S Goodyear call it all season all terrain

I was making the point that the 205/70/15 tyres make for an easier drive. Logical considering they would have been 14" standard.

I happen to have found these pretty good. Of course other makes are available. But It might be worth not going down the route of slapping on the biggest tyres you can squeeze on. Just a thought.

It wasn't about the size it was about not having two spares and having one tyre that can be used in all situations be it mud snow ice or a sunny day on the motorway , there's nothing wrong with 205/70/15 tyres,i have a set myself

That makes total sense.

I must admit that I was pretty impressed with the handling of these on road as well as off but then I tend to drive maybe 20 miles max from home in one stretch.(Firewood deliveries)

The (to me) acceptable slight rumble may offend if I were travelling a distance. And my vehicle is a work truck, used off road on a daily basis.

Clearly there is an compromise to be made when weighing up the best tyres for what you want from your vehicle and where you take it.

Are there quality all-purpose tyres available in this size?
