Front diff deleted details?

Postby silverbullet » 28 Sep 2017, 09:51

Whilst browsing for some other bit of nerdy info, I tripped over this (press release?) image.

Note the J-shaped oil feed tube for the gun-drilled and cross-drilled pinion shaft, feeding oil to the needle race between the pinion shaft "treibling" and input shaft "Flanschwelle" and also the VC spindle splines...

The broken pinion shaft that I turned into a workshop tool has no such drillings! (They fracture between the bearing lock-nut threads and the splines btw)

A detail deleted by the bean counters?

Also note the VC with welded-on end covers and filling plugs on both sides.

Aidan tells me that there are a pair of unused cast-in holes (untapped) in that very location.
I would post a pic, but the loan diff case is with the gearcutters to check speedo pinion meshing!
