Leaking diesel from the filler?!

Postby Gary. » 03 Aug 2017, 07:53

OK, I have searched here and elsewhere, but cannot get a answer to this peculiar problem on my syncro doka.

After 'brimming' the tank and then taking a short drive, but mostly downhill, fuel was literally pissing out of the filler. Would someone be able to explain why this would be? I presume any returned fuel would drop back into the tank?

Might this have anything to do with the coinciding failure of my fuel sender unit? - it was rather vague anyway :?

I know very little about Syncro fuel tanks but on my 2WD there is a ball valve at the bottom of the filler pipe to stop fuel going back up to the filler cap.

The fuel sender is also where the fuel is returned from the filter. There is a 6mm spigot in the middle of the sender unit where it enters the tank.
It could be that the tank vents are buggered so the tank is pressurised and because its full the leak is at the weakest point.
This is all speculation but worth investergating.

Thanks, where is the tank vented? Seems easy enough access for the fuel sender.

Was thinking of just replacing the fuel level sender unit anyway, the retaining rings have some rust but not horrendous. What parts should I get for this job?

Any tips on getting unplugging the sensor wire? It's just jammed solid.
