Syncro 2.1 exhaust feedback

Postby bikermike87 » 22 Dec 2016, 15:28

Hi everyone, I managed to damage the atlantics exhaust a couple of weeks ago and it had a fair few holes in it too, so I decided to look for a new one. Now, I researched loads of options and decided to go for a local exhaust shop. They have good reviews and build really special systems for custom cars. They seem to be starting to enter VW's too. I liked the fact they were down the road, offer a lifetime warranty and would fit it all for me too. The price was very good too.

Anyway, I did say they could modify the original design, but I mentioned keeping the exhaust above the engine protection bars.

It's complete and I'm really happy with the performance, noise and the company. I did however get a little bit concerned around it sitting a bit lower than what it was (at least I think it is).

I don't batter my van off road, the 4wd is used for good traction on muddy fields, beaches and snow. I would rather be happy with the zorst and not worry about asking for alterations. Skid plates were mentioned too.. the company is very good and I want to remain on good terms.

So what do you think? Anything i need to worry about, given I am really happy with everything else?

Thanks, do you think it's sitting too low below engine mount? It's now the lowest point at the back..

That cross pipe does look a little low compared to the skid plates. I had a custom stainless exhaust fitted to my Syncro not too long ago. I'll fish out some photos when I get home from work...

I've had a JP stainlees exhaust for over 10 years and it looks very similar to that one. I don't do rough stuff with so there hasn't been any problems on that front. I had two or three free parts under warranty in the last ten years so cant complain really. Its important to have the correct supporting brackets fitted though!

Here's mine... Cross pipe is definitely above the skid plate.

yes, on second thoughts I guess the pipe is slightly low. Mine also clears the bash plate.

Thanks everyone.

It's certainly got me thinking..

Maybe I should have a word and ask for it to be changed, so it doesn't sit lower than engine bars? I don't know if I am being too fussy, given it might never need to be above the bars. Hmmm

If you don't ask for the alteration, it will keep niggling in the back of your head - for a long time....

A stainless is for life, not just for Christamas :rofl

I've also got a JP system and looks a tad higher but if don't go macho off road wouldn't worry.

Buuut - as Ray above said support brackets essential with 2.1 as I found out with much hassle from cracked header pipes. SS is britle.
It was Ray (or someone else called Ray?) who put me right many years ago! original brackets to the crank case were still available then for just a few quid and cured problems.

Sorry to say but not impressed. Silencer is too small for the saddles at the very least (does it not rattle?)

What was a "very good price" anyway? It doesn't hang properly and lacks attention to detail, that rings alarm bells to me. Why not a BW system?

The problem with buying a system off the shelf is that you have to get someone to fit it for you. Okay, you could attempt it yourself, but not everyone wants to do this, and there's always the dreaded studs to think/worry about.
If you buy from an exhaust specialist, they make it to fit (using the original as a guide), and the price includes removing the old one. This is a lot cheaper than buying the system then paying someone to fit it, or to fix it, once you've made a mess of the studs. However, I do agree that the maker needs to know what he's doing, and know the vehicle.
I thought long and hard about the various options when I replaced my exhaust, and decided to go local. They built and fitted it for a fixed price, and that didn't alter, despite huge problems removing two of the studs. I also have a lifetime guarantee. If it breaks, they'll fix it - no charge and no quibble.
