87 syncro Gear Lever selection problem

Postby cali4 » 03 Jun 2016, 11:54

looking for some help with gear shift lever problem, recently bought the westy syncro and after the first 4km drive to fill up with petrol and car wash the gear change became difficult to select gears. after getting back onto the drive and taking a closer look the plastic ball joint fitting at base of lever had popped out i pushed this back and and it was shifting while parked...test drove to end of the road and it popped out again...

after checking on-line it seems this 87 westy syncro has a different gear stick to some other models, it does not have a diamond shaped hold down piece and not sure what would have been original on the model? previous owner advise it was a new gear lever. don't yet have any manual or technical guides to assist me.

apologies for first post help request, the van is in Strood Kent an i would appreciate advise on any VW specialists in the area? or members who could take a look and offer advice on what is needed for a fee.

kind regards

Welcome to the forum!
I am in Gillingham, Kent and own a 1990 syncro... so gearstick should be the same?
It might be that somebody has installed a 2WD gearstick? im literally guessing....

You are more than welcome to pop round and have a look at mine (i have just ran out of MOT so cant drive it over to you anytime soon). At least that way you can see if the gearstick is different and why....
Even if i pop over and have a look i doubt i would be able to help much as i am not too familiar with the different versions of the T3.
Feel free to PM me and i will send you my number.
Any one for cricket? what what?
