Is that the 16" with the tipper back that's now in the 'Historics at Brooklands' auction?

http://www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2016-06-11/cars/ref-15-1992-volkswagen-transporter-double-cab-4x4-synchro.aspx?p=

If so does anyone actually know what it really is, as such as where it came from, as all they seem to say is "This model was never offered in this country, but one Right Hand Drive Special Edition Jagdwagen (Hunting Car) Crew Cab built as a one-off order for a customer." without mentioning where that actually was.

Its on a 'L' reg plate, which would mean 1994, so that cant be right, so has accidentally been put on the wrong reg when imported.

If you do a check on the reg it comes back as first registered in the UK 14/05/2007 which confirms its an import.

The Chassis number is missing a digit WV2ZZZ24ZGOO7496, and most importantly its the year code, which goes between the Z and the G, with the G being the factory code for Steyr Puch, so atleast it was a Syncro!

If you take an educated guess at the year code, as the vehicle is described as being a 1992, stick a 'J' in making it WV2ZZZ24ZJGOO7496 then it returns the vehicle details, what was originally a White Double Cab Syncro with a 1.6 JX and brown interior, has the correct 251 option code for being a 16", was RHD, but doesn't have the option code for MPH speedo or our UK spec dip dim driving lights, so its RHD but definitely not UK.

So does that leave us with it either being from South Africa or Australia?

Nice detective work . Mine was registered in Germany and used there for the best part of its life before import to the uk.

Well done chaps. The VIN tells all. SA never built trucks afaik (happy to be corrected) and anyway the first letters of the VIN would be AAV for VW in Uitenhage.
Is the inference that this is a "truck that never was" and being passed off as something unique or über rare?

PS it could have originally been sold new in Eire (rhd, German/Austrian build), then registered in the UK with an approximate age plate (or it was an unsold stock vehicle, hence the 1994 reg as date of first use)

SA never built trucks afaik

Sorry, wasn't trying to say it was SA built... as the factory code in the VIN says H which means Steyr Puch, so it is the real macoy.

It definitely was the real deal, as when you check the corrected VIN it comes back as being a 16" RHD white 1.6 JX with brown interior.

Its just a bit weird why all the important details are a little big vague, on a weird reg, chassis number missing a digit, and saying lots about it being a special order from someone with connections in VW, without actually giving any kind of a hint to prove that or even saying what country it came from.

I just assumed if it really is a special order from someone with connections and wanting a RHD, its more likely to be someone in SA than anywhere else.

Yep !! from Europe ? ( Busman sold it some time ago )

Busman seem to have found another RHD 16", so they seen to have a source for them.

G is Steyr (Graz) for syncros only
H is Hannover built 2wd vans
(Ignoring the pilot built early syncros and end of the line 2wd when everything went to Graz to make space for the new T4 line at Hannover)
