Is this a reasonable price?

Postby philyoung » 18 Jan 2016, 20:51

Hello all, I'm entirely new to vdubs and to syncros but I seem to have got the urge to get one. Anyway currently on eBay is a 1988 RHD caravelle GL, top bid currently 3600, not sure if it has a reserve. It runs but doesn't have an MOT currently although the seller says it doesn't need a lot doing. Is the price in the ball park? I can't easily view as I'm in Portsmouth and the van is in Manchester. Longer term plan would be to convert to a camper but in the short term would be a great vehicle for camping trips. Thoughts please syncro experts....

Phil, it looks ok but I'd want something with some mot for anything above £3000. That way at least you'll know if it drives.

Thanks, maybe not one to go for then, especially as I can't get to view it easily. I saw a similar one on the coastvw website not so long back which was MOT'd and sold for £6000 I think. Hence thinking under £4K wasn't too bad if it didn't need masses of work for MOT. I'll keep looking.

Tend to agree - if it was the seller asking how to sell his van, the first thing would be to get the van MOT'd. Apparently it doesn't need much, so you'd have thought they would have made the effort. Anyway, it looks as though the bottom six inches have been repainted to cover a rust issue - note also the different colour paint in the rear seams. It might be interesting to take a good look at this, also to see the underside, particularly around the jacking points, and the ledge behind the front bumper. No rust streaks from the windows, though.
That said, it looks fairly tidy, though they could have made a better effort to get it ready for sale. 91,000 miles isn't a huge amount if it's been looked after. Would be good to talk to the previous owner, if you could, as the current ones don't seem to know too much about it.
Don't buy without viewing and driving it. See if you can get to it, and if not, maybe someone on here can take an experienced look at it for you. Simon at T3volution will do this very well, for a fee. It looks cheap but could need a whole lot of work.

Thanks, the auction only has 20 hours to run so not much chance of getting anyone to look at it for me. As you say if it really didn't need very much for MOT, getting that done would boost the price a bit. I wondered if somebody on here might know it as RHD syncros seem to be fairly rare.
