New SA syncro

Postby Bigjcc55 » 22 Sep 2016, 18:19

I've used the adapter plate on a tdi conversion, but it was on a diesel with the ahu flywheel, I didn't know it meant the starter could be used in on a wbx.
I'll need to do some more research before deciding what set up to go with.

Worth knowing. Thanks Pete :ok

Sounds like your aftermarket a/c may be the same as mine, which is slowly coming out to be replaced with a factory setup that I aquired out of an SA Caravelle. So if you need any trim bits.... I don't think the pipework will be any use as it has been dead for many years.

Syncro in the oven this morning, unfortunately not mine!:(
I'm letting a mate paint his in the booth to save him doing it in a dusty cold shed.
Not much more on mine, got the doors wired for electric windows and the dash back in now with a working heater motor.Image

Tonight I got the front subframe out to make painting the wheel arches and bits if the underside easier, and the front end was getting re bushed any how, I'll hopefully get the back arms and front shocks off on Saturday, then I can get the underside sealed up and painted then the inside and finally the outside.
Is it worth poly bushing everything or is some best left in rubber?(apart from the rack)
Photos are not the most interesting but here's a couple of tonight's progress.ImageImageImageImageImage

A loan of the correct tooling would be much appreciated if possible.
I have poly rack bushes, and new ball joints, just hadn't made my mind up yet on the rest.

Interesting to see SA's take on the HD (aka 16") strengthening. Is it the same or subtly different?

It has the infills on the inner quarter panels, the bottom of the b post, and the front spring towers, where else were they on a European Syncro?
Seems strange it would have the big rear shafts but small fronts.

All the 2wd SA buses had 108mm CV's afaik (my 1990 small window also has them) so they just added the 14" front end. SA always seemed to get the updated parts last, such as cast lower arms etc.

Bigger front drive shafts were fitted randomly on SA syncro's.
Not all SA busses had the 108mm CV's all pre 85 and 1800cc vehicles up to 2002 had the 98mm joints.
As said before all SA syncro's had all the 16 reinforcements and more.
The pressed lower arms were used in SA up until early 1990. Must say i have never come across a corroded one in SA.

Thanks for the info. I doubt that there are any 1.8 Volksiebuses here in the UK!

Last week I sandblasted all the suspension parts and re painted them gloss black, they are now all rebushed and ready for when the arches and underside are painted.
This morning I got in the back of the lower front panel sealed up, and the inside of the off side front arch.
Slow progress but getting there.
