Smily the 1.6TD syncro

Postby ThorAlex » 29 Sep 2013, 12:55

Just thought I'd make a thread about my van here. This will not be a full out resto, nor will this van ever look really nice or be in top shape. This will just be an old tired van being kept alive, enjoyed, used, and sometimes maybe abused a little too. And everything will be on a minimal budget, so don't expect top quality from this one (although I'll try not to mess it up too bad either :P )
(duplicate post from thesamba just to get started)

I bought Smily this summer, it was in good running order but looked tired and rusty. Very little significant rust tho, engine was believed by the seller to have been new about 80000km ago (he started studying abroad right after buying it and never got around to do anything on it). It turned out to have some problems, engine is not new but has an AMC head, someone messed up the exhaust so it's leaking at the manifold were they used incorrect bolt, turbo leaks exhaust between the turbine housings, home made muffler mounts (but the muffler looks to be the correct one???). And i forgot to air up the tires at the first gas station ( i knew they were low) so i screwed up the VC pretty good, but that is all my fault.

Other than that it's pretty good, It's going in to have the manifold gaskets replaced tomorrow and I'll sort the turbo when i can find a good used one. Despite everything it runs fine, have been dead reliable so far and gets decent mileage so all in all I'm happy!

So, Here are some pic's:

Anyone care to guess were the name comes from?

Sorted some stuff today:

"New" radio, payed less than 5£ at fretex:

I need to change some LED's in the dash to red to get a matching theme.

Put in a gear lever repair kit from brickworks, had over 5mm of stop in the old ball joint.
New kit fitted to the guide box:

Huge difference! Now i can actually feel were the gears are supposed to be 8)
I was going to do the fork repair too, but...:

I don't think i can fix that! It will have to wait for a front to drop in my lap.

Also, the van was at the shop on monday to fix the manifold leak, but they refuse to touch it till i can get a better turbo as the exhaust studs are rusted to hell and they wont risk not being able to get them out. It's busted anyways, so i have to get a new turbo anyways, no biggie.

It's done 350 000km, i did not expect it to be in perfect shape :P

On the other hand, brakes, shocks, ball joints and most hand brake cables were replaced for it's MOT in November, so after the engine it should be only relatively minor stuff left.

So Smily finally got a new used turbo, new exhaust manifold gaskets, air filter and intake hose down the pillar. Nice to feel the turbo kick again! Rear seat is out due to water under the mats, luckily no rust. Need to change the rubber donuts in the steering column, and It'll be getting new oil and filter and some sound deadning pretty soon.

Since last time i posted here it's also gotten a new instrument cluster with tach, new 215R14 winter tires and some other minor bit's and bob's.

Also, passed 350k km (217.5k miles) last Friday \:D/ Still starts every time and has yet to let med down!

It's nice to know there's a T3 out here. :D
We've been in Tromso since Thursday and seen loads of T 4's and 5's. Not one single 3 though :(

Come down here to Steinkjer, there are at least 5 other T3's on the road locally and a few more sitting around not running... They exist in Tromsø too, i did see one last time i was there so keep looking!
